WEB Rhulani Mokwena Appointed Mamelodi Sundowns Head Coach

Mokwena Becomes First Black Head Coach in Club's History

History and Career Progression

Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club (commonly known as Sundowns) has appointed Rhulani Mokwena as their new head coach, making him the first black African coach in the club's history. Mokwena's appointment comes after the departure of South African football legend Pitso Mosimane, who left at the end of last season.

Mokwena has a strong track record in South African football, having previously served as co-coach of Sundowns alongside Manqoba Mngqithi in 2020. Prior to that, he was the head coach of Bloemfontein Celtic and also worked as an academy coach at the club. Mokwena's appointment is a significant milestone for South African football, as it represents a growing trend of black coaches being appointed to top positions in the country's football pyramid.

Sundowns have been one of the most successful clubs in South Africa in recent years, having won numerous league titles and domestic cups. The club is also a regular participant in the CAF Champions League, Africa's premier club competition. Mokwena will be hoping to continue Sundowns' success and bring more silverware to the club in the years to come.
