House Passes USA FREEDOM Reauthorization Act
Reauthorizes Intelligence Gathering Provisions
Bill Now Heads to Senate for Consideration
On March 11, 2020, the House of Representatives passed HR6172, the USA FREEDOM Reauthorization Act, by a vote of 278 to 136.
This bill reauthorizes through December 1, 2023, provisions related to intelligence gathering under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) that were set to expire. The provisions in question allow the government to collect data on foreign individuals overseas for national security purposes.
The bill also includes several reforms to the FISA process, including requiring the government to obtain a warrant before targeting a U.S. citizen or permanent resident for surveillance. The bill also establishes a new Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board to review the government's intelligence gathering activities.
The bill now heads to the Senate for consideration. It is expected to face opposition from some senators who have raised concerns about the bill's impact on national security.
